             FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

10/15/05

WomenWhoLead.org, a Groton-based educational foundation, is pleased to announce the publication of the first volume in its biography series about worldwide women rulers, both ancient and modern. Aimed at a young-adult audience (grades 7-9), “Queen in Waiting: A Life of ‘Bloody Mary’ Tudor” is the 32nd book written by Groton author Georgess McHargue and is available from Amazon.com, barnesandnoble.com, and iUniverse.com.

“Georgess brought us this project a few years ago,” said Cindy Beams, president of the Sophia Foundation, parent organization of the Women Who Lead project. “We were startled to learn that there are dozens of courageous and fascinating women rulers about whom no one has written for this important age group. I certainly didn’t know about Nzinga Mbandi of Angola (about 1580-1663), the Trung Sisters of Viet Nam (first century A.D.), or Queen Margaret of Denmark (reigned 1384-1399).”

The project supports not only a biography series but a Web site and has plans to create a curriculum based on women rulers and to encourage young people to participate in on-line research that will be used in future books. The first draft of the next book in the series, “Foremost of Women: A Life of Hatshepsut, Pharaoh of Egypt,” is already well advanced.

"As with all nonprofits," said Aleta Manugian, a board member of WomenWhoLead.org, "we depend very much on volunteers.  At the moment, we are especially in need of help in the areas of grant writing, publicity, and Web design.  Fortunately, some of these tasks can be performed remotely."
