How Did This Project Come About?

Freelance writer Georgess McHargue discovered the need for a series of books on women leaders a few years ago, when her sixth-grade daughter asked her for a book on "Bloody Mary" Tudor, Queen of England. Research showed that this sister of Elizabeth the Great was only one of dozens of powerful women of all nations who were missing from young-adult literature – from Hatshepsut (about 1500 BCE) to Catherine the Great (1729-1796 CE).

McHargue offered the book series to several major publishers, many of whom had brought out her work in the past.  Several were willing to contract for a single title or a single book treating many women in brief.  However, McHargue insisted that the series would be done right (meaning having and keeping in print several volumes at once), or not at all.  Cindy Beams, a friend of McHargue's, undertook to start a nonprofit organization (now the Sophia Foundation) to assist with the books’ publication and the creation of a web site with access to research projects and curriculum materials for young-adult students in grades 7-9. What you see here is the result of that collaboration.
